On the Shoulders of Giants

The burning church

rotten wood burns faster...

The party go back to Pinnacle to continue their investigations. They bump into Frances de’Vere outside the temple, and Jesse follows him and finds he’s got a dwarven friend with 8 copper rings on his hands. The party investigates the temple and finds ample evidence of the church’s corruption, but nothing further to do with the Blood of Vol.

While they investigate the temple catches on fire, they evacuate the building by smashing out a window and using a makeshift tapestry-rope to get the parishioners to safety. The fire was started by an “elemental grenade” – a fire elemental trapped in a glass sphere. They defeat the fire elemental and continue with their investigations.

After a short rest they head towards the district of Firelight but are ambushed by a gang of thugs. After a hard-won battle they emerge victorious, but decide to call it a night and head back to the guild to rest up.

Hey Steve,

Our current contract is to investigate the crimes and find the perpetrators of the murders, thefts and animations at the elven temple, isn’t it? The client is the Undying Court, isn’t it? And we are to be paid guild rates (ie. 8sp/day plus one share of the loot), aren’t we? How does the guild charter define “loot?”

The burning church

Correct. The guild rates apply. “Loot” is loosely defined as anything you find and pick up that can’t be proven to belong to a legal entity.

The burning church

Oo, so though it can’t be proven, the 1,200gp belonged to the Temple of the Host. The 600gp, weapons and armour belonged to the guys who mugged us and we’re not going to worry about them because they’re dead or not coming to get it back. Or did the money belong to people who’d been mugged before us? We can’t find them to give it back plus we’ve done a community service by making the bridge and Fire Light safer so that’s our reward. Sorry to the people who were mugged but at least they won’t be mugged by those guys again.

Now, Elatha isn’t a guild member, is he? He’s also an employee of the Undying Court, isn’t he? So he would have his own contract with the Undying Court and as he’s not a guild member, he’s technically not entitled to a share of the loot. True?

The burning church

Am I also correct in assuming that when the group is divided, loot is only shared amongst those present. Jesse was tailing when Axel, Elatha and Amaril found the 1,200gp in the chest so isn’t entitled to a share should anything be shared? M3 and Lady were conducting their own investigations so are entitled to neither the 1,200 or the 600 and equipment.

The burning church

Guild rules about loot are very loose, mainly because there are so many different ways that loot can be found. I’d personally split loot like experience points, with everyone at the session getting a share, but ultimately it’s up to you guys. If you want to keep it all or give it to someone specific it’s all good.

The burning church

Understandable that guild rules are loose. Just looking for what policy we have written down and agreed to and what precedents are in place to use in any disagreements about treasure.

Hey, popped something in the house rules.
